People learn in many different ways. I believe that I learn best by studying others. I was fortunate to have learned from my parents and countless role models throughout my life. And I am still learning – every day. I learned a lot and gained amazing inspiration from dozens of Pittsburgh youth who entered Covelli Enterprises’ Fourth Annual Martin Luther King Writing Contest and Leadership Award.

We are in the service business. We pride ourselves on treating our customers with courtesy and respect. That’s what my late father, Albert Covelli, always taught me about operating restaurants and that’s one of the main lessons we’ve stressed to our associates. So, it’s thrilling for me to walk into one of our Panera Bread restaurants and see our staff members practicing what we’ve taught them.

There were so many winners, on and off the course, at Sunday’s Panerathon in downtown Youngstown. I will begin with Dr. Rashid Abdu because it is his dream that we’re supporting with the Panerathon. Dr. Abdu, a humble man who speaks softly, is so devoted to the community and honoring the memory of his late wife, Joanie, that he helped create the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at Mercy Health.

Ed Anderson held the bright orange bag in his left hand while he used his right hand to scoop up the items spread out in front of him, including a chapstick, a balloon and a tiny box of Nerd’s candy. He then dropped the bag into a box at the end of his table. Anderson was almost done with his second box of packed gift bags to distribute to the children attending the Panerathon Aug. 30. This second box meant a few things to Anderson.

I guess it’s fair to call me a competitive guy. But there’s winning and then there’s really winning. Covelli Enterprises has a lot of wins every day. We are the largest franchisee of Panera Bread restaurants. We win many Panera corporate-wide awards for sales, for cleanliness, for service. And I am proud of all of those accomplishments.

See former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch with his wife, Latasha, and some of their dogs when he leads the Sixth Annual Panera Pup Walk June 14 at the Waterfront Shopping Center in Homestead. Bring your family, friends and dogs to benefit the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society. Registration starts at 9 a.m. in front of Panera Bread, and the walk starts at 10 a.m. near the base of the Homestead Grays Bridge.

There is so much that I love and appreciate about operating Covelli Enterprises and Panera Bread restaurants and there’s no way that I could begin to explain all of them here. But I am going to concentrate on one of the biggies here: giving back. I’ve talked about giving back on some of my earlier blogs, but quite honestly, it’s like saying “thank you.” You can never say it enough.
