In 2014, the Trumbull County St. Vincent De Paul Society served between 35,000 and 40,000 meals to people in need. It also offered food to nearly 1,000 families and sold goods at a thrift store at dramatically reduced prices.

And in 2015, Dave Skowron, president of the board of Trumbull County St. Vincent DePaul, anticipates that the organization will encounter far more needy families and be called on to do even more.

“It’s such a sad thing to say,” Skowron said. “The numbers of poor people are increasing and people are scrambling.”
Poverty knows no restraint and no moderation.

Organizations like the St. Vincent De Paul Society work hard to try to help the hungry and the poor.

Officials of the Trumbull St. Vincent De Paul recently came to see me to talk about their work at their local facility at 2415 Niles Road, S.E., in Warren.

I was, of course, moved by the sheer volume of people who are served by the organization. The numbers of people that they serve seems to never end.

There are young and old, African-American and white. The only common denominator is that their clients are in need and most are hungry.

It is, of course, hard to hear about so many needy people and difficult to realize that in this land of plenty that we have poverty of this magnitude.

Covelli Enterprises contributes to St. Vincent De Paul Society and to other organizations dedicated to help those in poverty.
But our contributions aren’t enough.

My hope is that other companies will assist St. Vincent DePaul and look at the fine work that the organization is doing and realize that Skowron, the staff and volunteers there need help.

Thank you, St. Vincent De Paul Society. And thank you to the many whom I hope will contribute.
