In late December 2014, I spent a good amount of time focusing on the year that was. I reflected on my family, our businesses, our community and our country.

I thought about victories and failures and I pondered what new directions we might take in the new year.

My conclusions are straightforward: Any new directions must be guided by core philosophies of always doing the right thing and adhering to basic values. I know this may sound overly simplistic and quite honestly, doing the right thing isn’t hard.

It’s about treating people with respect and dignity.

It’s about remembering that we are all people, regardless of what’s in our bank accounts, what kind of cars we drive or the name brand of shoes we wear.

It’s about remembering that some of us have been luckier than others. It’s about trying to help those who have been less fortunate.

It’s about meeting our obligations to contribute.

It’s about being honest and reliable.

It’s about putting integrity above personal gain.

It’s about valuing the truth. Period.

It’s about doing what you say you are going to do when you say you are going to do it.

It’s about what it’s always been about: doing the right thing.

I am so proud of my family. And by family I mean more than my father and mother, wife and our three children, I mean our extended family of more than 25,000 associates with whom I am privileged to work in our various businesses.

I am proud of our collective accomplishments, our record of service and the legacy we are creating of doing the right thing.

I can’t wait for 2015 to get fully underway. It’s going to be a spectacular year!
