Tuesday was the kind of day that we live for all year long. It was the kick-off of our special puzzle piece cookie sales to benefit different autism organizations at all of the Panera Bread restaurants that are part of Covelli Enterprises.

And when I tell you that you could feel and see and smell and taste the excitement, I am not exaggerating.
Let me offer some examples.

There were employees from our Canfield Panera restaurant in Ohio who were decorating cookies with children from the Rich Center for Autism at Youngstown State University in Ohio. I am not sure who had more fun, the Rich Center students, or our Panera associates, Kelly, Marci, Taylor, Mindy and Lori.

Then, there were Becky and Colleen at our Elm Road Panera Bread location in Warren, Ohio who designed shirts and ordered them for all of their staff members. Then, they hung streamers from the ceiling along with puzzle pieces.

And then there’s Ohio Gov. John Kasich who took a “selfie” with his Panera Bread autism Puzzle piece cookie. Check it out on our website. But Gov. Kasich is not alone!

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty and Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman are among the many others who have taken selfies with their autism cookies.

The cookies are flying off the shelves in all of our stores.

So far, Independence is winning. The cookie sales continue until April 19.

But don’t forget that we have some fiercely competitive associates who don’t like to lose and this is a fabulous cause. Plus, the cookie is great.

Trust me, I speak from experience. I’ve had a few cookies. (We’ll just leave it at that.) OK. I’ve had more than one and less than a dozen. Who can eat just one? Don’t judge!)
