08 Mar Khalil Harper writes about Dr. King’s lasting legacy
Khalil Harper, who won second place in the 2015 Covelli Enterprises Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest, wrote about Martin Luther King Jr.’s lasting legacy on the world.
Harper wrote, “Martin Luther King was a peaceful man who only looked forward to a peaceful world where we could all live in harmony. In order for our country to honor Martin Luther King’s beliefs, we need to learn how to handle situations in a peaceful manner and we must learn how to forgive. Martin Luther King proved that forgiving is the first step to improving through his speeches and protests. With this in mind, I theorize that if MLK was still alive to see our world he would agree that his words were remembered and honored by our generation learning how to forgive but never forget.”
Harper, who is a junior at Penn Hills Senior High School in Pittsburgh, plans to study software engineering in college.
Although Harper believes that Dr. King would be impressed with the country’s progress, he said he also believes that there are some areas that would upset the civil rights leader.
