I am from Warren, Ohio and I can’t say enough good things about my hometown and the entire Northeast Ohio region.

We have a resilient spirit and we’re proud people. We understand hard work and we appreciate opportunity.

And it’s those qualities that have propelled so many companies and individuals from our region to leadership positions in society.

Let’s start with Packard. Warren Packard came to the village of Warren in the 1850s to help usher in a new era of business and industrial expansion.Warren’s sons started the Packard Electric Company in 1890 and the first Packard Motor Car was built in Warren in 1899. The company was a leader in countless ways.

But what I admire most about the Packard family and the company was their unwavering commitment to service. First, they brought people electricity and then they brought them automobiles.

Numerous other Northeast Ohio people and companies have also pioneered important work.

Fast forward 100 years and meet The Honorable Nate Jones, who was born in the Smoky Hollow neighborhood of Youngstown.

Jones, who served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, had been the general counsel of the NAACP and worked diligently to end school segregation in the north.

Warren native Austin Pendleton, the acclaimed actor, author and director, has overcome stuttering to entertain millions.

Jack Warner, who grew up in Youngstown, was the co-founder of the legendary company, Warner Brothers.

I am just getting started.

There are so many. Roger Ailes, president of Fox News, is from Warren.

Simeon Booker, who lived in Youngstown, was the first African-American reporter for the Washington Post. He also covered some of the most pivotal stories in our nation’s struggle for civil rights and is credited with helping to speed up critical reforms.

And then we have sports legends – too many to even list – who have helped make our region proud.

And our companies…

We have Turning Technologies, a modern-day company whose products are used in thousands of college classrooms across the country.

There are many others that have made it big: The Edward J. DeBartolo empire, AVI Food Systems and others.

I am so proud to call the Mahoning Valley home and grateful for all of the lessons the Valley and its people have taught me and others with whom I am privileged to work.
