I just finished reading the essays that won the Covelli Enterprises Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest in Pittsburgh. To say that I am impressed would be an understatement.

I am in awe of the work of the students who wrote essays and poems for this contest. Read them for yourself here and watch videos where the students talk about themselves.

I also continue to be deeply moved by the words of Dr. King, one of our country’s greatest leaders.

I am hopeful that a realization of Dr. King’s dreams isn’t too far in the offing for our country.
We’ve certainly made progress as a nation, but I recognize that we still have work to do.

I am disturbed by the lack of opportunity afforded to many African-Americans. I am firmly committed to ensuring that Covelli Enterprises is a place where all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, ethnicity, religious or sexual preference, can grow, prosper and feel welcome.

I am extremely proud of our record of creating a positive workplace and of creating opportunity for all.
And like Dr. King, I continue to look forward to the day when a person’s skin color no longer defines his or her opportunity. I urge people to keep working for equality. As Dr. King said, “We’ve got to keep on keeping on in order to gain freedom.”
